Research Interests
Structural Engineering in general, Earthquake Engineering, Structural Dynamics, Seismic Design and Reinforced Concrete Structures and Elements in particular. Seismic response of structures Base isolation and hybrid systems - Development of hybrid and combined systems including active controlled stiffness damping devices and base isolation systems. Control algorithms - development of a selective control approach for hybrid systems, for application to structures under random loading, development of a method for fast simulation of seismically-excited active controlled MDOF structures. Passive controlled devices - Development of methods for optimal design of ADAS damped structures, and practical application of off-the-shelf viscous dampers for optimal structural response. Active and semi-active damping systems Development of active friction dampers, controlled stiffness damper, which does not change the vibration period of the structure, active viscous damping system, and combined devices. Testing structures subjected to dynamic loadings Using structural parts for experimental investigation of full scale structures. Developing methods for testing heritage buildings. Testing full scale structures using a vibration generator. High performance materials, elements and structures Two-layer beams Development of two-layer beams, consisting of high strength fibered concrete in the compressed zone and normal strength concrete with bar reinforcement in the tensile zone. Column-slab joints Investigation of flat-slab joints between high strength concrete columns and normal strength concrete slab: confinement, strength and ductility aspects. Fibered concrete Experimental investigation of strength and ductility of steel fibred high strength concrete - strength and ductility aspects. Nondestructive testing Using nonlinear ultrasonic and acoustic emission for detecting damage in concrete. Engineering education Developing concepts related to using programming for teaching engineering subjects. Developing concepts for teaching structural dynamics using a small scale laboratory shaking table.
